Ortho-K

What Is Orthokeratology,
Ortho-K?

Orthokeratology, often called Ortho-K, is a non-surgical vision correction method that uses specially designed contact lens molds worn overnight. These molds gently reshape the front surface of the eye while your child sleeps. After the molds are removed in the morning, the reshaping effect provides comfortable vision that lasts throughout the day, without the need for glasses or daytime contact lenses.

Where Did the Name Come From?

The term orthokeratology comes from Greek:

  • ortho, meaning straight or correct

  • kerato, meaning cornea

  • logy, meaning the study or practice

Together, the word means the practice of correcting the shape of the cornea. This reflects what the contact lens molds do: gently adjusting the front surface of the eye to improve vision.

How Ortho-K Helps Slow Myopia Progression

Research shows that wearing Ortho-K contact lens molds each night can significantly slow the progression of myopia. The reshaping effect creates a specific optical profile on the eye’s surface that reduces the signals encouraging the eye to grow longer, which is the main cause of increasing nearsightedness.

We offer several advanced Ortho-K designs, including CRT, Euclid, and our doctor’s own custom Ortho-K design. This allows us to tailor the fit and treatment approach to your child’s individual prescription, eye shape, and visual needs.

Why Children and Teens Prefer Ortho-K

  • No glasses or contact lenses needed during the day

  • Ideal for sports, outdoor activities, and busy lifestyles

  • Safe, reversible, and non-surgical

  • Supported by strong evidence for slowing myopia progression

  • Worn only at night, providing daytime freedom

Ortho-K for Adults

Ortho-K is also a great option for adults who want freedom from glasses and daytime contact lenses but prefer to avoid refractive surgery. Wearing molds only at night offers convenient, all-day visual comfort in a fully reversible way.
