Myopia Control

Why Is Myopia Control Necessary?

Myopia (short-sightedness) is becoming increasingly common in children worldwide. While glasses or contact lenses can correct blurred vision, they do not slow the eye’s growth, which is the root cause of myopia progression. When the eye continues to grow too long, this increases the risk of long-term eye health problems. Frequently the vision worsens through childhood and adolescent growth spurts, then stabilizes in young adulthood. The doctors at Capitol Eye Care Center closely monitor children with myopia. Customized treatment to slow myopia progression, called myopia control, is available.

Why controlling myopia matters:

1. Myopia tends to worsen as children grow
Most children with myopia experience progression each year. Without intervention, their prescription may continue to increase into the teenage years.

2. Higher prescriptions bring higher eye-health risks
As the eye elongates, the tissues inside become stretched and fragile. This raises the lifetime risk of sight-threatening conditions such as:

  • Retinal detachment

  • Myopic macular degeneration

  • Glaucoma

  • Early cataracts

3. Early intervention is more effective
The fastest progression typically occurs between ages 6–12. Starting myopia control early can slow or reduce the overall lengthening of the eye, helping protect vision for life

4. Better quality of life
Slower progression often means:

  • Thinner, lighter glasses

  • More options for sports and activities

  • Greater long-term visual comfort
